Nayland Rock Hotel, Margate
This historic Grade II listed premises was originally built in the 1880’s and has continued to provide hotel facilities from Thanet’s beach front. The current owners appointed architects Hollaway Studio to design a sympathetic yet modern refit and extension that retained the listed building status yet included modern 21st Century technologies combining them into a 5-star hotel.
BSE3D where entrusted to develop an energy and sustainability strategy and building services feasibility assessment to support a planning application. Our feasibility study covered mechanical, electrical and public health services to identify plant strategies including locations and distribution routes. The feasibility study considered space and aesthetic limitations both internally and externally and Building Regulations and local planning policies.
Our team developed a comprehensive sustainability report which reviewed available technology and their compatibility with an urban, seafront property. The strategy proposed was an air source heat pump system (ASHP) used to deliver the hotel and spa’s heating, cooling and domestic hot water demands. The shift in plant from the existing gas fired system to electrical fed services, in addition to the new pool and spa would increase the building’s electrical demand. Our skilled team worked with the architect and the electrical distribution network operator (DNO) to find a suitable location for a new substation.
