Client: New City College

The Epping Forest Wellness Centre, located in Loughton, stands as a testament to contemporary design and sustainable building practices. This state-of-the-art facility, serving both New City College students and the local community, encompasses a sports hall, gym, fitness suites, and a welcoming reception area with an integrated café.

The heating, cooling, and hot water systems were designed to suit the use and functionality of the space, with some using concealed FCUs and others using underfloor heating. With the exception of the sports hall, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems were installed throughout the building to maintain optimal indoor air quality and thermal comfort. The sports hall utilises natural ventilation through strategically placed wind turrets, effectively mitigating the risk of summertime overheating without relying on active cooling systems.

100% LED lighting was used in and around the building, controlled via a wireless mesh lighting control system and energy efficient lighting installation that has the adaptability to various activities and events that this building could see.

The centre’s construction employed Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), a modern method of construction that offers both structural strength and environmental benefits. Additionally, photovoltaic panels installed on the roof contribute to the building’s energy efficiency, reducing its overall carbon footprint.

This project exemplifies a harmonious blend of sustainable construction methods and efficient building services, resulting in a facility that not only meets the needs of its users but also aligns with broader environmental goals.
