9th -15th  February National Apprenticeship Week: Building Careers at BSE|3D

By Helen Morphew

At BSE|3D, National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity to celebrate the people who represent the future of building services engineering. As a leading global MEP design consultancy, we are committed to developing engineering talent through an apprenticeship scheme that focuses on long-term careers, not just qualifications.

Our apprentices are based across our two UK offices and are fully integrated into project teams from day one. They gain hands-on experience on live projects, supported by structured learning, mentoring, and the guidance of experienced engineers, many of who began their own careers as apprentices.

From early involvement in design coordination to supporting contractors and clients, our apprentices quickly become part of the full project lifecycle. As George explains:As an apprentice I have developed new skills in collaborating with contractors on large scale projects and I am now involved in every stage of the life-cycle of the project; from preparing fees to final handover.’ This exposure allows apprentices to see how MEP design shapes real buildings and real outcomes. Oliver highlights this creative and technical journey: ‘What starts as just lines on a page becomes the design that brings a building to life, and I really enjoy being part of that process.’

A key strength of our scheme is the balance between academic learning and practical application. Harriet reflects on the value of experiencing both simultaneously: ‘Combining the theory I was learning at university alongside seeing how it was applied in real time during the design stage was incredibly useful. Understanding not just how things are done, but why we do them simultaneously, was a great approach to learning.’ For many, engineering is a natural fit. Ashley notes: ‘I have always been mechanically minded and enjoyed finding out how things work, so engineering is a good fit for me.’

Our apprenticeships offer a compelling alternative to the traditional full-time university route. Jake explains: ‘I was drawn to an apprenticeship over the traditional, full-time university route because I get to earn while I learn and I have no student debt.’  Our commitment to apprenticeships is shared at every level of the business. Director Carl Morphew, who began his own career as an apprentice, comments: ‘Having started my own career as an apprentice at SEEboard thirty-five years ago, I truly appreciate the value of apprenticeship schemes. At BSE|3D, we are proud of the many apprentices within our business; their dedication, curiosity, and fresh ideas make a real difference. Training them to become excellent engineers is not just part of what we do, it’s an investment in the future of our industry.’

This National Apprenticeship Week, we are proud to recognise our past and present apprentices and the contribution they make across both our offices. At BSE|3D, we are not only shaping buildings, we are shaping careers and supporting the next generation of building services engineers.
