Spain: Europe’s Next Data Centre Powerhouse

Earlier this year, BSE|3D marked a significant step in its European growth story with establishing a new Madrid office and team, bringing a dedicated local team and a milestone in its European expansion.  Spain has become one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in Europe and the government is doubling down. 

A market backed by the government

Spain’s ambitions aren’t just industry talk, they’re backed by the state. Spain has allocated €719 million towards building an AI gigafactory to reduce its dependence on foreign technology and ensure AI development complies with European regulations, with a multi-site bid covering locations in Catalonia and Madrid.

That public investment sits on top of a wave of private capital. Commercial property firm Colliers reports that the Iberian Peninsula now accounts for nearly 14 GW of IT capacity in announced data centre projects, with more than 3,300 MW expected to become operational before 2030 and that Aragón, Madrid and Barcelona are concentrating the largest volume of new projects designed for AI workloads.  Colliers also notes Madrid currently has 175 MW of IT capacity operational against more than 1,400 MW in the pipeline.

Location and climate

Spain’s location gives it a natural advantage as a digital gateway, bridging Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Several subsea cable systems come ashore along the Spanish coast, at points including Bilbao, Valencia, Barcelona and Cádiz: linking the country directly into intercontinental data routes. That physical connectivity translates into real operational benefits: lower latency and stronger network resilience, both of which matter enormously to hyperscale, cloud and AI operators choosing where to build. Cable projects like Grace Hopper, 2Africa, and MAREA have all landed on Spanish shores in recent years, reinforcing the country’s role as a key link between continents.

Spain’s warm, dry climate creates ideal conditions for adiabatic cooling, enabling operators to maximise energy efficiency while significantly reducing cooling costs throughout the year. Compared with more humid regions, Spain offers greater opportunity to exploit natural climatic conditions, delivering lower operational expenditure and improved sustainability performance. 

At the same time, the emergence of next-generation AI platforms, such as NVIDIA Vera Rubin, is fundamentally changing data centre cooling strategies. These new systems are designed to operate at higher temperatures, dramatically increasing the number of hours during which free cooling can be utilised

Combined with the country’s growing renewable energy capacity, this positions Spain as a genuinely strong option for operators who want efficient, sustainable facilities without sacrificing performance.
