<p class="wp-block-paragraph">MSSW 2026 came to a close with an outstanding final day, bringing together students, STEM Ambassadors, exhibitors and industry professionals to celebrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Throughout the event, students took part in a variety of engaging, hands-on activities designed to inspire curiosity, develop teamwork and highlight the diverse opportunities available within STEM careers. From robotics and virtual reality to engineering challenges, broadcasting, recycling and electrical projects, the day was packed with exciting learning experiences.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Congratulations to all the schools and STEM Ambassadors who participated. The quality of the projects and presentations was exceptional, making the judges&#8217; task of selecting winners incredibly challenging.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The awards for top projects were presented by Mims Davies MP, Philip Todd (Chair of MSSW and MD of BSE3D) and Richard Cox (CEO) of BHBPA. St Lawrence School and S&amp;T Controls took 1st place. Southway and OnxyGeo received 2nd Place and The Windmills School and University of Sussex were awarded 3rd place.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) 2026 and at BSE|3D, we are proud to recognise the talented female engineers across our business who contribute to projects, mentor future talent and help shape the future of our industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">INWED gives us an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, expertise and impact of women across the engineering profession. This year’s theme, Engineering Intelligence, gives us the chance to highlight the knowledge, innovation and human experience engineers bring to the built environment and the wider world.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engineering intelligence is often associated with technology, systems and data. While these are an important part of modern engineering, intelligence in our profession is also about people and the ability to apply lived experience, collaborate effectively and make informed decisions that improve outcomes for clients, communities and future generations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For our female engineers, this intelligence is demonstrated in many ways. Across our business, women are contributing as both mentors and mentees. They are sharing their technical expertise, professional knowledge and lived experience to support one another and strengthen our team as a whole. Whether guiding early career engineers, developing practical design solutions or bringing different perspectives into project discussions, these valuable contributions help create more thoughtful, balanced and effective engineering.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year’s theme is also particularly relevant to the work we undertake within the data centre sector. Our engineers play a key role in delivering global critical infrastructure that underpins the digital services relied upon every day by individuals, businesses and organisations across the world. From cloud computing platforms to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, data centres are becoming increasingly central to modern life and global connectivity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Women within our teams are helping to engineer these highly technical environments through contribution to the design and delivery of the next generation of <a href="https://www.bse3d.com/our-portfolio/data-centres/data-centre-master-planning" type="link" id="https://www.bse3d.com/our-portfolio/data-centres/data-centre-master-planning"><u>data centres</u>.</a> The data centres they are designing support AI technologies, digital platforms and processes and essential business operations worldwide. Our data centre clients expect technical excellence, collaboration and forward-thinking designs to meet their evolving requirements for resilience and performance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The built environment and construction industries continue to evolve, so it is essential that engineering remains inclusive and representative of the communities it serves. By encouraging and supporting women in engineering industry wide we not only strengthen the profession but help ensure that the future of engineering benefits from the widest possible range of skills, experiences and ideas.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Designing cooling systems for data centres is straightforward when the end user’s requirements are known. The real engineering challenge arises when they are not. For developers delivering speculative or multi-tenant data centres, the eventual IT load, rack density, and cooling philosophy may change several times before the facility is fully occupied. Designing around a single cooling strategy in these circumstances can create operational constraints, inefficiencies, or costly retrofits. Hybrid cooling offers a more resilient solution.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The Uncertainty Problem<br></strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Modern data centres are evolving rapidly. Rack densities that once averaged 5-10 kW are now commonly 30 kW and beyond, while AI and high-performance computing deployments can exceed 80-100 kW per rack. Without clarity on the future tenant profile, committing to either traditional air cooling or full liquid cooling can be risky.<br>Air systems may struggle with ultra-high-density loads. Conversely, fully engineered liquid cooling infrastructure may remain underutilised for years if tenants deploy standard enterprise IT. This uncertainty requires flexibility built into the mechanical design from day one.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What Hybrid Cooling Means</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hybrid cooling is not simply mixing technologies. It is a deliberate design strategy that allows multiple cooling methodologies to coexist and scale as demand evolves. In practice, this typically involves:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>High-efficiency air cooling to support conventional IT loads across the white space</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Liquid-ready infrastructure such as facility water loops, secondary cooling distribution, and spare capacity for future CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) deployment</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Modular plant design allowing incremental upgrades as rack densities increase</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Adaptable containment and airflow management that can transition between cooling approaches</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result is a platform rather than a fixed solution.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From 19th &#8211; 21st May, alongside more than 16,000 industry professionals, we joined one of the biggest events in the built environment calendar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now UKREiiF comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on a fantastic few days spent connecting with people from across the built environment sector. The energy throughout this year’s event was electric, with conversations centred around innovation, collaboration and the exciting future of the industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The BSE|3D team attended more than 45 fringe events and seminars throughout the conference, taking every opportunity to gain insights, strengthen relationships and stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving building services landscape.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A Market Full of Momentum</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the biggest takeaways from UKREiiF this year was the clear sense of momentum across the sector.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) reporting a 16% increase in collective turnover among the UK’s largest M&amp;E contractors, alongside continued growth driven by opportunities in data centres, decarbonisation and increasingly sophisticated building engineering, it’s clear the industry is entering an exciting new chapter.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Across every conversation, there was a shared focus on creating smarter, more connected and more sustainable places and communities. From regeneration and sustainability to the future of design and project delivery, collaboration and innovation were at the heart of every discussion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>BSE3D and Modus Hosting A Fringe Networking Breakfast</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the highlights for the BSE|3D team was hosting a fringe networking breakfast alongside <a href="https://modusltd.co.uk/">Modus</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event created a fantastic opportunity to bring together professionals from across the industry, exchange ideas and have open conversations about the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the built environment.</p>
