National STEM Day, celebrated on 8th November each year, is a day dedicated to inspiring and encouraging young people to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). For us at BSE|3D, a leading UK building services engineering company, National STEM Day represents a vital opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to advancing STEM in the UK through hands-on initiatives and educational outreach. As we look to the future, it’s clear that tomorrow’s engineers, technicians, and innovators are today’s students. That’s why we’re proud to play an active role in inspiring the next generation by promoting STEM pathways and empowering young people to envision themselves in STEM careers.

Our Team of STEM Ambassadors

We’re proud to have a team where the majority of our engineers are certified STEM Ambassadors. These ambassadors are passionate about sharing their expertise and experiences, serving as mentors and guides for young people interested in the exciting possibilities of STEM. Through their volunteer work, our ambassadors help students connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world applications, making complex topics tangible and inspiring a long-lasting interest in STEM.

Our STEM Ambassadors regularly visit schools for careers events, Mid Sussex Science Week, and engage students in discussions about the challenges and rewards of careers in STEM. These interactions provide young people with the opportunity to meet real engineers and get a sense of what a future in engineering might look like. For us, it’s not just about education, it’s about igniting curiosity and showing young minds the meaningful impact they can make through STEM.

Mid Sussex Science Week: A Unique STEM Event

One of the most significant ways we celebrate National STEM Day is through our annual STEM event, Mid Sussex Science Week. This event was the inception of our MD Philip Todd and a local councillor 10 years ago, uniting local schools and businesses in a dynamic, hands-on week of STEM projects and learning. Throughout the week, students from various schools work closely with local businesses and engineers, including our own team, on real-world STEM challenges.

Mid Sussex Science Week aims to raise awareness about STEM careers and opportunities by engaging students in practical, teamwork-oriented projects that make engineering concepts both accessible and fun. The event is designed to foster collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills; all critical elements of a successful STEM career. By the end of the week, students present their projects, showcasing their hard work, creativity, and new knowledge to a judging panel of industry professionals.

Building a Sustainable Future Through STEM Awareness

Building services engineering plays a crucial role in creating sustainable, energy-efficient solutions that address modern challenges in areas such as climate change and resource management. By engaging with young people through National STEM Day and initiatives like Mid Sussex Science Week, we hope to inspire the engineers, architects, and environmental scientists who will tackle tomorrow’s challenges with innovation and resilience.

We believe that students equipped with STEM skills will be empowered to contribute to sustainable solutions and make a positive impact on their communities. Through our commitment to STEM outreach, we aim to cultivate a generation that not only understands the importance of sustainability but has the skills and confidence to lead the way toward a brighter, greener future.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers and Innovators

As we celebrate National STEM Day this year, we’re excited to continue our efforts to inspire and support the next generation of engineers and innovators. By participating in STEM outreach and events like Mid Sussex Science Week, our team is doing more than sharing knowledge, we’re helping to build a community of learners, creators, and problem-solvers who will shape the future of engineering in the UK and beyond.

If you’d like to learn more about our involvement in STEM initiatives, meet our ambassadors, or find out how your school or business can get involved in Mid Sussex Science Week, we’d love to hear from you. Together, let’s celebrate STEM and continue to open doors for future generations.

BSE|3D is thrilled to launch the 2024 Mid Sussex Science Week, and it will be our best yet! Together with our partners at BHBPA we have organised the free Science Week event for local primary schools in the Mid Sussex area. We have 9 schools attending this year, each partnered with a local business, to create an exciting science-based project. The week runs from 8-12th July, culminating in an exhibition day at Haywards Heath College on Friday 12th July. Exhibition day is always epic! Our 9 schools will present their projects to our panel of judges, and there will be local businesses exhibiting around the exhibition hall, giving the children an awareness of different STEM careers. And the best bit? An incredible Science Show for the children after prize-giving.

The 17th June saw the finale of a fantastic week of collaboration between schools and local business to enthuse the next generation of Engineers and Scientists in Mid Sussex.

The Mid Sussex Science Week (MSSW) was co-founded by Philip Todd of BSE3D Consulting Engineers and has now been running for 6 years in Haywards Heath despite a break due to Covid. This year was the first visit to Burgess Hill. During the week local companies STEM ambassadors engaged with over 250 primary school pupils across Burgess Hill, helping them develop engineering and science projects. Students represented each school to present and be judged on their weeks work at The Kings Centre on the Friday.

BSE3D helped organise the event and showed the children how to make LED torches and use them for sending messages using Morse code. Friends and colleagues from Broadcast Bionics gave the young technologists an opportunity to find faults in a live radio broadcast and a chance to record their own voice overs as a DJ. Edwards Vacuums showed the effect that a vacuum has on various items including marshmallows – which the children enjoyed eating too! ISG who are currently building the new Woodlands Meed College, had the assistance of the pupils, to create a gigantic 12 foot high tetrahedron structure, while Burgess Hill manufacturer, Bio-Productions, had some fantastic demonstrations bringing biological technology to life. Sally Turner, a team GB Athlete sponsored by BSE3D brought in her bike and some sports equipment to show the children how science and technology are used to help athletes perform better and BSE|FM constructed a heat recovery ventilation unit with the children to ventilate their school classrooms.

The organisers were delighted to see such enthusiasm in the children who were all keen to share their projects and explain what they had learnt. Sincere thanks to all sponsors – without their generosity this event could not have taken place.

Like many other events due to take place this year, we were devasted when we received notification that the Big Bang Fair South East 2020 was cancelled. Over the years we have seen many marvellous creative innovative designs while assessing and judging at the regional heats, as it plays a big part in our ongoing STEM involvement and was always one of our main highlights of the year!

However, it wasn’t completely gone and instead it went ‘DIGITAL’.

Although the Big Bang Fair was a unique event that gave future scientists and engineers a more hands-on interactive opportunity the new digital version still offers a variety of ways to get involved including pod casts with guest speakers, activities and many other resources to continue inspiring the next generation.

We are now looking forward to next year’s Fair being bigger and better than ever!

Dates for next year are to be confirmed.

Due to Covid-19 all STEM activities with Mid Sussex Science Week are suspended

The largest regional STEM event was held last week at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex.

Held annually for 9
to 19 year olds this event provides a unique festival atmosphere for teachers
and over 10,000 students across two days. They were offered experiences in:

VR and tree climbing

Meeting inspirational STEM role models, including our very own STEM Ambassador, Phil Todd Managing Director.

A chance to discuss STEM career options

Entering the UK Big Bank Competition

Attend workshops run by employers and businesses showing real life application of learning.

Science demonstation captivating it’s audience.

For the past five years Phil Todd has been part of
the competition judging panel, this year judging the Junior Engineering
group. This year proved hard to choose a winner from all the worthy
projects entered.

The winner was Regis School with a brilliantly presented project named: “Can my hamster power a light bulb?” The runner up was PACA with: “Drones for Crocodiles”.

It’s encouraging to
see so many children enthused by STEM and hopefully they’ll follow this forward
in years to come.

Transform The Future

This year Women in Engineering (WES) will be celebrating 100 years.

BSE 3D actively encourage our engineers to progress their professional development. Harriet Morphew, a Building Services Engineer is a student member of WES which is a network of women in engineering who offer inspiration and support to current and aspiring members. In addition to supporting its members, WES aims to inspire, encourage and empower the next generation of women to enter the industry and become engineers. She is also a STEM Ambassador, demonstrating diversity and hopefully inspiring future generations.

WES will coincide their centenary with the International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on Sunday 23rd June 2019. INWED is an awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the career opportunities available to girls and women in this exciting industry.

BSE 3D actively promote and support inclusivity and diversity in engineering. The need for a more diverse workforce is ever more apparent with the looming large skills gap and proudly support the INWED awareness campaign.

BSE 3D have an ethos of encouraging children to engage with engineering from an early age. Director Carl Morphew and Building Services Engineer Harriet Morphew presented to local primary schools about STEM, engineering roles, some fun experiments and finishing with an engineering challenge.

Carl explained how engineering influenced him when he was younger and how this ignited the spark for Harriet, who is now a STEM Ambassador and a member of Women’s Engineering Society.

The presentation also included information on how BSE 3D bring buildings to life by designing services, for example: heating, lighting, hot & cold water and the internet.

Demonstrations followed showing what can be achieved with just a few basic items found in the home. Children were given activities, one included – who can be the first to put on the following: hard hat, hi-vis jacket and safety gloves.

Culminating with a bridge building experiment. The task, to design and build a bridge with the least amount of materials using the parameters of the bridge specifications and listed materials.
