The largest regional STEM event was held last week at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex.

Held annually for 9
to 19 year olds this event provides a unique festival atmosphere for teachers
and over 10,000 students across two days. They were offered experiences in:

VR and tree climbing

Meeting inspirational STEM role models, including our very own STEM Ambassador, Phil Todd Managing Director.

A chance to discuss STEM career options

Entering the UK Big Bank Competition

Attend workshops run by employers and businesses showing real life application of learning.

Science demonstation captivating it’s audience.

For the past five years Phil Todd has been part of
the competition judging panel, this year judging the Junior Engineering
group. This year proved hard to choose a winner from all the worthy
projects entered.

The winner was Regis School with a brilliantly presented project named: “Can my hamster power a light bulb?” The runner up was PACA with: “Drones for Crocodiles”.

It’s encouraging to
see so many children enthused by STEM and hopefully they’ll follow this forward
in years to come.

We need to harness the younger generation and at BSE 3D we are keen for the ‘young people of today’ to become the ‘engineers of tomorrow’. For that we need to engage with them early enough to develop and may be ‘light a spark’!

BSE 3D in partnership with the Local Authority and primary schools from the Crawley area have been given the opportunity to be involved. Students from years 2 and 3 have been selected for this special science engineering project.

BSE 3D Director, Carl Morphew will be visiting each school to announce the project and what their task will be. We don’t want to give too much away at this stage, all we can say…’it will be a fantastic opportunity to put their imagination to good use‘.

We are delighted to offer this wonderful experience to the younger generation to help develop and broaden their horizons and inspire them for the future.

“At its heart, engineering is about using science to find creative practical solutions. It’s a noble profession.” ~ Queen Elizabeth II

How do you inspire the scientific minds of tomorrow? By inviting primary schools in the local area to attend a Science Week. Each are paired with companies (STEM Ambassadors) to create a project across the week relating to the business activity. The event concludes with a showcase of each school’s project and science show. The idea, to inspire and motivate the younger generation as scientists and engineers with support from STEM Sussex and Brighton University.

Nine schools were represented producing inventive projects to an extremely high standard. Six independent judges spent time studying and talking to each school about their specific project, giving marks based on different areas of presentation, design and originality.

During the final day, schools were given an added challenge, to design and build a bridge that would support the weight of a bottle of water using the least amount of materials. The ultimate test, to ensure the bottle stays upright and in place for 5 seconds without the structure collapsing while in the judging test area.

Founders Pete Bradbury, a local counsellor and BSE3D Managing Director Phil Todd, were encouraged by the enthusiasm and diversity of the projects exhibited and the passion shown from all the children. We are extremely grateful to all businesses who gave up their time as Company Ambassadors, without you, the spark to ignite for STEM may not take children from primary school and inspire into secondary school and beyond.

Prizes for ‘best project’ and ‘design challenge’ were awarded by local MP Sir Nicholas Soames.

Best Project – 1st Prize: Lindfield Primary, who get to visit the ‘Bag Bang South East’ event as part of their prize

2nd Prize: Blackthorns Primary Academy

3rd Prize: Bolnore Village Primary

Design Challenge – Harlands Primary

Students Choice – St. Josephs

Mid Sussex Science Week 2017 was launched at Elvira’s Cafe, Borde Hill Gardens on 16th February. Attended by STEM Ambassadors and local school representatives, it was the first meeting outlining this year’s project, Volcanoes!

It was a great event, enabling schools to meet their STEM Ambassador for 2017 and to start thinking of unique ways to approach this year’s topic.

Speakers at the event:

Pete Bradbury-Chairman

Phil Todd-STEM Ambassador

Rachel Day-Project Coordinator, STEM Sussex
