Modern buildings succeed or fail on the performance of their services. Heating, cooling, power, lighting, water, ventilation and controls must work together seamlessly to create spaces that are comfortable, efficient and resilient. At BSE|3D, we design Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) systems that integrate these elements from the outset, turning complex building requirements into coordinated, high-performing environments.

Our approach begins with one principle: building services are not an add-on. They are the operational backbone of every building. By embedding MEP strategy early in the design process and developing coordinated 3D models, we ensure systems are efficient, buildable and fully aligned with the architectural and structural intent. The result is fewer clashes, smarter plant strategies and buildings that perform as designed.

Energy performance is central to everything we do. We prioritise low-energy system design, intelligent controls and careful plant selection to reduce operational carbon while maintaining reliability and comfort. Through integrated modelling and performance-led design, we create services strategies that support both sustainability targets and long-term operational value.

Our expertise spans a vast range of sectors, each with its own technical demands.

In healthcare, including hospitals and care homes, where resilient and compliant building services are critical to patient safety, clinical performance and CQC outcomes.

Within commercial environments, we design flexible and efficient systems that support evolving workplace demands.

For listed and heritage buildings, sensitive integration allows modern services to coexist with historic fabric.

Across education facilities, we prioritise healthy learning environments through ventilation, lighting and thermal comfort.

In hotel and leisure developments, comfort, energy-efficiency and operational reliability are essential to guest experience in a 24/7 environment.

For data centres, we deliver high-capacity electrical and cooling infrastructure designed for uptime, redundancy and scalability.

In transport and infrastructure projects, robust services ensure safe, reliable and maintainable public spaces.

Working with government and local authorities, we support sustainable public assets designed for longevity and operational efficiency, while working within challenging budget constraints.

And within high-end residential, discreet and high-performance systems provide comfort, efficiency and intelligent building control.

Within defence facilities, we deliver resilient, secure and operationally robust building services engineered to meet the exacting demands of critical environments.

Across every sector, our role is the same: to coordinate the systems that allow buildings to function. When MEP design is considered strategically, not retrospectively, it enables architecture, structure and technology to work as one. That integration is where BSE|3D adds value. Through technically rigorous design, coordinated digital modelling and a deep understanding of building performance, we help deliver buildings that are efficient, resilient and ready for the future.

Education environments are changing rapidly. Schools and universities must now deliver healthy learning spaces, energy efficiency and long-term resilience while supporting evolving teaching practices and growing student populations.

Across the UK the scale of investment reflects this shift. Government programmes are committing tens of billions of pounds to rebuilding and upgrading the education estate, including nearly £20 billion for the School Rebuilding Programme through to 2035, alongside billions more for maintenance and capital improvements. Delivering modern learning environments at this scale requires precision building services engineering.

At BSE|3D, we design the mechanical, electrical and public health systems that allow education buildings to perform efficiently, reliably and sustainably.

Engineering spaces that supports learning

Students perform better in environments that are comfortable, healthy and well-lit. Building services play a critical role in achieving this. Our MEP designs prioritise:

High-performance ventilation that improves indoor air quality and concentration

Efficient heating and cooling systems that maintain stable learning environments

Intelligent lighting that supports wellbeing and reduces energy consumption

Reliable electrical infrastructure to support modern digital learning

The goal is simple: buildings that actively support teaching and learning.

Designing for Complex Education Environments

Education facilities are far more than classrooms. Universities and large schools include laboratories, lecture theatres, sports facilities, libraries and social spaces. Each environment has unique building services demands. Laboratories require precise environmental control. Lecture theatres need carefully designed ventilation and acoustics. Large communal areas demand flexible HVAC and lighting systems that adapt to changing occupancy. Our approach ensures these diverse spaces operate seamlessly within a single integrated building services strategy.

Future-Proofing the Education Estate

Education buildings must serve generations of students. That means designing infrastructure that can adapt to changing technology, sustainability targets and campus growth. At BSE|3D, we apply advanced modelling and BIM coordination to create systems that are efficient, adaptable and easy to maintain. From low-carbon HVAC strategies to renewable energy integration, our designs support long-term performance and reduced operational costs.

Engineering the Next Generation of Learning

The future of education depends on infrastructure that works quietly in the background, providing comfort, reliability and sustainability without distraction. At BSE|3D, we combine technical expertise, sector insight and precision design to deliver high-performance building services for schools, colleges and universities. Because when the environment supports learning, students and institutions can perform at their best.

The 17th June saw the finale of a fantastic week of collaboration between schools and local business to enthuse the next generation of Engineers and Scientists in Mid Sussex.

The Mid Sussex Science Week (MSSW) was co-founded by Philip Todd of BSE3D Consulting Engineers and has now been running for 6 years in Haywards Heath despite a break due to Covid. This year was the first visit to Burgess Hill. During the week local companies STEM ambassadors engaged with over 250 primary school pupils across Burgess Hill, helping them develop engineering and science projects. Students represented each school to present and be judged on their weeks work at The Kings Centre on the Friday.

BSE3D helped organise the event and showed the children how to make LED torches and use them for sending messages using Morse code. Friends and colleagues from Broadcast Bionics gave the young technologists an opportunity to find faults in a live radio broadcast and a chance to record their own voice overs as a DJ. Edwards Vacuums showed the effect that a vacuum has on various items including marshmallows – which the children enjoyed eating too! ISG who are currently building the new Woodlands Meed College, had the assistance of the pupils, to create a gigantic 12 foot high tetrahedron structure, while Burgess Hill manufacturer, Bio-Productions, had some fantastic demonstrations bringing biological technology to life. Sally Turner, a team GB Athlete sponsored by BSE3D brought in her bike and some sports equipment to show the children how science and technology are used to help athletes perform better and BSE|FM constructed a heat recovery ventilation unit with the children to ventilate their school classrooms.

Guest of Honour, Mims Davies, Member of Parliament for Mid-Sussex and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Employment, emphasised how important it is to encourage science, technology, engineering and maths with our young people, especially with Burgess Hill seeing the commencement of a new science and technology park. Mims thanked Philip Todd of BSE3D and Richard Cox of BHBPA and presented the winning school team, Birchwood Primary School, with a magnificent trophy and science-based books courtesy of Canterbury University STEM Hub.

BSE 3D have an ethos of encouraging children to engage with engineering from an early age. Director Carl Morphew and Building Services Engineer Harriet Morphew presented to local primary schools about STEM, engineering roles, some fun experiments and finishing with an engineering challenge.

Carl explained how engineering influenced him when he was younger and how this ignited the spark for Harriet, who is now a STEM Ambassador and a member of Women’s Engineering Society.

The presentation also included information on how BSE 3D bring buildings to life by designing services, for example: heating, lighting, hot & cold water and the internet.

Demonstrations followed showing what can be achieved with just a few basic items found in the home. Children were given activities, one included – who can be the first to put on the following: hard hat, hi-vis jacket and safety gloves.

Culminating with a bridge building experiment. The task, to design and build a bridge with the least amount of materials using the parameters of the bridge specifications and listed materials.

We need to harness the younger generation and at BSE 3D we are keen for the ‘young people of today’ to become the ‘engineers of tomorrow’. For that we need to engage with them early enough to develop and may be ‘light a spark’!

BSE 3D in partnership with the Local Authority and primary schools from the Crawley area have been given the opportunity to be involved. Students from years 2 and 3 have been selected for this special science engineering project.

BSE 3D Director, Carl Morphew will be visiting each school to announce the project and what their task will be. We don’t want to give too much away at this stage, all we can say…’it will be a fantastic opportunity to put their imagination to good use‘.

We are delighted to offer this wonderful experience to the younger generation to help develop and broaden their horizons and inspire them for the future.

Royal Holloway University of London is situated within 135 acres of picturesque parkland. Our latest appointment involves The McCrea building and school offices which are set within 6 different buildings on the Egham Campus of the University. The project involves working within existing buildings and with a tight deadline will make this an interesting challenge for the team to say the least, and we do relish a good challenge.

Our expert team of engineers will be on hand throughout the project to solve any issues as they arrive, working in close partnership with the contracting teams to deliver the completed spaces on time and on budget.
